The world seems so complex. When Krebs returns, no one celebrates. Again, the marriage of plot and style make this story outstanding. He did not want to have to do any courting. Young women look modern and everyone is involved in political relationships with everyone else.

This is evident from the first few paragraphs, which serve the sole purpose of illustrating this to the reader. First, it makes the story easy to read for the common person of the twentieth century.

Because of his unique tie to Krebs, the story flows easily and comes to life for the reader. Now, he watches girls walk by and thinks that they are made out of a nice pattern.

He also cannot get anyone to listen to his stories. He wishes that the book had more maps because he wants to pinpoint his experiences. Krebs wants everything to be simple. Yet, I sometimes think that my style is suggestive rather than direct.

However, it serves to show the wandering mindset of the narrator. Krebs likes the looks of the girls, but does not want to have to talk. Krebs had not wanted to come home, but he had. But, she says, he must find a job. It is also interesting that despite his detachment from others, Krebs still has an interest in looking at the girls in the town.

In many ways this suggests that Krebs is no longer seen as being part of the town or as conforming as the other soldiers who returned to town. The effect is accomplished, rather, by the calculated emphasis and repetition which makes us remember what has been said.

He is unable to live his life as normally as he had prior to going to war. They may not have changed but Krebs has. Scores of articles, and even some books, have been written on the subject, and it is to these that the serious student should go for additional, more detailed information.
